* There was no "kiss" in the episode so I used the next best thing.

The Cordy icons were some of the most challenging and interesting to do, partly because I hadn't planned on making any Cordy icons when I started. Her fear is played entirely for laughs in the episode, hah-hah, vain, self-conscious, socially-aware girl is terrified of being a nerd on the chess team who wears frumpy clothes and has "ugly" hair. Hah hah.

Well, not so funny when you consider what the loss of social status would actually mean (as we will see in Season 3, when she's left isolated by both the Scoobies and the Cordettes); not so funny when you consider the fact that she's been raised in a culture where a woman's self-worth is traditionally rooted in the kind of husband she is able to "catch", and her appearance is her main tool or weapon in pursuit of a husband.

And not so funny when you consider the racial implications of how smooth, silky, manageable hair is prized over curly or "kinky" hair. The "right" kind of hair is the kind that you see in the shampoo adverts; the wong kind is anything else, regardless of your race or ethnicity, although it's identified non-whites. Which is why I myself, as a white female, didn't appreciate my own thick, curly mane until I was well into my 20's, because it was the "wrong kind of hair" and ergo, the implication that something was fundamentally wrong with me. (Also not funny - catching said mane on the button of a professor's peacoat on the bus during a field trip.)

The more I looked at the images of Cordy, the more I also realized how well her fears reflected or paralleled those of the other characters and fit into the episode; and so I wanted to have one of her and the one of Vamp!Buffy touching her own face in the Category set.

Most of the nightmares can be catagorized as Appearance or Performance, regardless of the gender of the dreamer. So Xander shows up nearly nude in class, Cordy has ugly hair and clothes that mark her as a social outcast, Buffy is turned into a vampire (appearance); Billy is beaten nearly to death for disapppointing his coach, Willow is forced onstage to sing an opera she doesn't know and can't make a sound, Buffy's mind goes blank during a test, and Giles mourns at the sight of Buffy's grave (performance). But these two catagories often overlap, and so Buffy's failure to kill the Master (performance) leads to her becoming a vampire (appearance.)

For the AC set I originally wanted to do all Vamp!Buffy, but that felt like it would have been sort of copy-catting sweet_lyri's all-Buffy AC set.

Alts & Extras? But of course!

#11 was inspired by a comment I read at the AV Club Buffy rewatch three years ago: "Would you think I was weird if I said I think Joyce is kinda hot?"  And I thought, dude, I'd think you were were weird if you didn't think she was "hot". WTF? Because she's over the age of 30? GMAFB

32 - 37

  38 - 43

44 - 47 suitable for customization. The background of 46 47 puts me in mind of an AU plot where Buffy and Joyce are in Istanbul and Paris fighting monsters, having grand adventures and doing a little shopping along the way: The Incredible Summers Women World Tour. (Featuring Dawn as Watcher Junior, of course.)

Wow, it was a very dramatic set! My favorite was Handwritten, and I love all the variations of happy Buffy with happy Joyce. Wonderful work!
Oh good, it's a very dramatic episode! I obviously had fun with the handwritten one (I say "fun" now because all the work that went into it has faded in my memory *lol*). There just aren't enough images of smiling, happy Buffy or Buffy with Joyce out there, I says.

Thank you so much for the compliments!
You did a glorious job here! I love these icons so much, as you know!

And you know I couldn't put this together without your keen eye and generous help! Thank you again so much.

BTW, making this set has me inexplicably imagining a Vamp!Buffy / Vamp!Willow AU, and how would that go down (would they battle for dominance, or VB be all, "whatever"; and how would someone write that and have an actual story with characterization and not descend into a mere NC-17 bloodplay-sex-fest (not that there's anything wrong with that *ahem*)

I may settle for making an icon.

Thank you and HELLO YOU! How did you know you've been on my mind lately? (I think it's the combination of seasonal spuffy and reading S10 comics that's done it.) Will you be submitting something to seasonal spuffy this round?
Alas, no.

Doctor Who is eating my head (we're at the end of the season! Only two episodes left...) and I wouldn't even know where to start.

But thanks for thinking of me. ♥
I love blank space (the emptiness of it is unique), cat 2 (the shattered image), and ac2 (the coloring is lovely)!
Thank you so much, I'm thrilled you like!

Confession: Negative Space is me returning to an image I used for a negative space icon in Round 1, my first ever 20in20:

Back when I had no idea what "blends", "layers" and "textures" were; kind of a "how far have I come?" deal.

cat 2 (the shattered image), and ac2 (the coloring is lovely)!

*blushes* Cat 2 was absolutely the hardest icon here you have no idea, I almost threw up my hands and submitted the plain alt because I couldn't get any texture to work on it without obscuring the image. And the coloring on AC2 was also very much a last minute addition when I saw how the plain version looked with the other entries.

How does that work for writers? I guess, if you have something in one chapter, but then your mind goes another direction and all of a sudden you have to decide whether to go back and edit the draft or leave things the way they are?

You wouldn't be the first person to prefer #6! I ended up using the version I did in AC1 just because I thought it went better with the other icons in that set, but it was close.
Amazing set!
Love in the clouds, handwritten, cat3, cat4, ac1 and ac2! ♥
OH wow, thank you! (I'm dying over here, like, "A rock star noticed my stuff?" *lol* An artist whose work I admire very very much at any rate.)
Your icons are so interesting. I'm also nodding along to all your thinky thoughts. Underrated ep IMO.
This is a really cool set!
My favorites are: Desperate, In the Clouds, Enemy, Cat 2, and Cat 4. :)
Thank you m'lady!

Remember when you first encouraged me to do S1 as a claim? It took a little while but this is my third S1-era claim now and it's been fun to revisit.
So yeah, this set is awesome! Seriously you've captured the essence of the episode perfectly hon. And I love your assessment of Cordy's role in the ep. And now the icons themselves - love, love, love them! Great compositions and colours!

My faves are clouds, handwritten, nose down, numbers, safe, C2, C4, AC1, AC2 and AC4. And from the alts, I really love 1, 2, 6, 12, 19, 31, 34, 38, 46, 47 and 56. Great job! :)
Thank you thank you and THANK YOU hon, so much!

Re: Cordy, it really took me by surprise because the episode itself as I recall (and commentary I've read by fans) seems to dismiss her and encourage us to just look at her as a joke in this one, until I really looked at the screen caps and saw a pattern I hadn't noticed before.
