SLAYERSTILLNESS: What if they gave an icontest challenge and (almost) nobody came?

So there were a total of three - count 'em, 3 - participants with 23 total entries for Challenge 37. VOTING DEADLINE IS TONIGHT MINDNIGHT TUESDAY DEC 23rd.

starry_night says that those 3 contributors may recuse themselves from voting, but I could not in good conscience ask other folks to vote if didn't myself; if I didn't promote these contests that would be another matter. This is NOT to be read as pressure or disapproval of other entrants' choices. Declining to vote because you don't feel you can be objective is a perfectly legitimate and sensible reason to decline from voting, and preferable to the more common opposite stance.

In fact I will defend to the death the right for anyone to say "I don't think I can cast an honest vote here so I'd rather not."  It's far preferable to the more common and opposite stance "I'm going to vote for my friends because they're my friends!" Not that I never ever did that *shifty eyes*. There was that one time: "This person's work has gotten no votes? Zip, zilch, nada, not one? Really? The heck with that."  Which, now that I think about it, kind of makes it sound like a pity f--k except, not as much fun - but with zero chance of contracting (unfunny) syphilis or other nasties. So it all evens out in the wash.

But to be honest, I didn't make my entry icons with prizes in mind, although I'll never refuse the honors of my peers and pretty banners to go with. I made these in a dig-down-deep frenzy after pickamix's (Megan's) death, to distract myself, to keep from thinking about things, to avoid mopping the kitchen floor.  Not that it worked that way, exactly; I kept thinking "would Megan like this one? Or this one?" And "Oh, here's one I started right at the beginning of the month and was going to show her because I made it with her in mind and then...never mind."

I still haven't mopped the kitchen floor however so, yay for procrastination?

I was going to hold a couple back for the current challenge on another icontest site I just discovered, whedon_elite . The winning entries in past challenges have been gorgeous and intimidating and the effects many people achieve are beyond my current skillset and/or tools; but rua1412 has been wonderfully encouraging on that account.

Still, I wanted to share this batch of icons with my friends. With the people reading this post right now, who read my posts regularly, who've been supportive and encourage of my newfound art "career", been with me through the housefire of 2014, the job loss of 2014, who I've laughed and cried and mourned with. As a way of showing off and saying Hey, look what I can do now and see how far I've come because I learned from you. You've been a part of that, you've inspired me, taught me. If I'm a better artist, it's because of you.

And someday I might just be able to remove the quote marks from around "career".

Voted!

I don't know which ones are yours (I could make a guess if you put a gun to my head, but I don't expect you to spend the holidays going around putting guns to peoples' heads, though after the suckiness that was 2014 I wouldn't blame anyone who did... OK, I would), but there are some very pretty ones in that batch.
Thank you! there are indeed some pretty ones - and I'm still weirdly obsessed by the notion that it looks to my eyes like there are at least four entrants not three. I'm more curious than usual to find out who the other two were.

And there's no way I'm not curious now as to which ones you'd guess were mine, except I can't confirm or deny either way now can I?

though after the suckiness that was 2014 I wouldn't blame anyone who did... OK, I would

Nope, no gunplay here; but I'm not going to miss 2014, at all.
I hope so. I honestly got caught up in holiday stuff and forgot to enter this time. The new year will bring iconage.
I already voted days ago. I think I spotted yours. There are at least nine icons of yours and I think I voted for three or two of them and I also voted for other icons because they deserved it. I hope I was fair to all the icon-makers because you guys are awesome and I love your work a lot.
Thank you hon!

"Nine" is a pretty close answer, as a matter of fact. I'm still guessing the other two entrants and unsuccessfully I might add.

And oh, hey, there's a nifty idea - instead of first second third place one round - let's have a game of "guess the artist!" Voter who makes the most correct guesses wins an award banner, or gets to commission an icon or banner.

I've no doubt that you were, hon.

Had I paid more attention I might have scaled back a bit because I want these things to be fair and competitive. Now I feel a little bit like I overloaded the thing, but I assumed there were going to be other last-minute entries like usual.

But then again I've won prizes, everyone who is likely competing this round has won things so what matter? We're all friends and it's all good.

That would be awesome. I would totally play for the win! XD

And you'd beat me too because I am so bad at that game, especially lately. I think it's fun to guess who made what with slayerstillness challenges and I am wrong well over half the time.

Hey, maybe I should suggest this to starry_night? *bats eyelashes* Either that or I run my own contest.

I've been sort of itching for a while to have a banner contest like these icontests, actually. Or maybe ask about running btvs_hush? I really am thinking about it and banners could totally be a part of it.

You do realize that now that you've "outed" yourself I'll have to cross you off my list of the two other entrants. *lol*

You know I how feel about this topic ^_^

I do, and I would really like to. I looked at all the posts of past winners and they are pretty, ever so pretty, and can do things I can't. But I like the idea of introducing variety to the overall look, and pushing myself to get better.

Thanks again for your tips about dodge and burn tools btw - ipiccy is no doubt a little different to PS but I experimented using them on some Buffy fanarts after we talked

I just replied to your comments thank you thank you THANK YOU! :D

And oh my gosh a thousand more thank yous for your compliments here, I am just blushing and scooping my jaw off the floor, you should know that. Thank you.
I already voted.
I'm pretty sure I voted for at least two of yours, but it's hard to know for sure. What I do know is that there were a lot of awesome icons in that set and I'm proud of you for entering!
Oh my gosh you are so sweet! *hugs you*

I'm pretty sure I voted for at least two of yours, but it's hard to know for sure.

Probably so just based on numbers if nothing else. "Enter as many as we want"? I was certain other folks would want to take advantage of that; I didn't take the holiday timing into account I guess. I would have loved for there to have been more people entering.

I'll be curious to see which ones everyone voted for, even if they didn't vote for mine! I had a super-hard time voting myself because there was something about nearly all the not-mine entries that made them worthy of my vote. Some very subtle and deceptively "simple" work here that isn't simple at all.

BTW - I was going over recent otherworldlyrics challenges to see which ones Megan had entered and won in (most of the ones she entered she took a prize); and I noticed anew a pretty icon you submitted not too long ago. Will there be more from you? Or better yet, more banners? *bats eyelashes hopefully*
I'm sure there will be. My art muse acts in fits and spurts, but she's in there somewhere and she usually shows up a couple of times a year. Not that this is much of a promise, but it's what I know.
It's enough to make me rub my hands in gleeful anticipation. Bring on 2015!

Whatever you do or don't do, it's all good. Thank you for being such a dear friend and so incredibly supportive, I can't thank you enough (and don't say enough.)
Oooh, lovely icons! I'm going to join and vote. (Without any prejudice because I haven't got a clue who's who.)
I'm going to join and vote.

Hurrah! Slayerstillness is a great icontest community; starry_night is a wonderful mod and a lovely all-around person, and it could always use "fresh blood" as voters and entrants. (I hope we'll see your icons in a future challenge?)

The comm also accepts more volunteers for making awards banners if you're interested.

I used to say that I didn't care about anonymity because I voted for the art not the artist but lately I'm beginning to appreciate the value of it in contests like these.

I've been participating in challenges for over a year and every time I think I've got somebody's style "nailed" I'm fooled. Finding out who made what afterwards is part of the fun.
