[And beautiful gift from a special friend inside, come see!]

btvs_hush Challenge 283: Thank you to everyone who voted my early-seasons Buffy icon First Place! I call this one "Gypsy Girl Boho Chic".
Hush is the first icontest community I ever entered, a year ago August, And this is the last round to be moderated by the amazing dragonydreams, who is looking to hand over the reins of the community to someone else, while she focuses on her other fandom projects including otherworldlyric. (PM her if you're interested.)  So this feels very much like the "closing of an era" , and it pleases me to have been a part of it much less to win first prize (and only my second first place win for an icon). This was a beautiful round, so many gorgeous entries; Elisabeth ends her tenure on a very graceful and elegant note.

slayerstillness Challenge 30:Thank you to everyone who voted my icon"Most Creative" and to starry_night for selecting "There Once was a Girl (Faith, Buffy, This Year's Girl) as one of her Mod's Choice icons that round! That was my favorites of my own set. In either case it was still a treat because SUCH a fabulous round of entries, so many gorgeous things to choose from. Check out the rest of her banners for this round here.

Speaking of Slayerstillness and banners, the ones I made for Round 31 are here; check out the fabulous winners. It was a lot of fun but also a real challenge to use the feather fans from the Lorne cap and try to work out an "old Hollywood/art deco look without falling into cliche. I hope I succeeded.
And finally:

THANK YOU to:  the talented and thoughtful pickamix for her gift to me of a Buffy/Sarah poster in TWO variants, featuring an image from my favorite Greg Gorman S5 photoshoot! They're lovely, warm and autumnal, a graceful blend of elegance and grunge that I adore. These are an example of graphics that don't look right downsized by LJ because the fine soft "killer-diller" details are lost - the way the velvet chair looks worn and soft to the touch; the background wall that glow with an inner light and suggest falling leaves, aging wall murals, and calligraphy brushstrokes all at once. Gorgeous.

I am so proud of you! Yay! Look at all those gorgeous icons you made! Well-deserved wins, my dear!

Also, that banner from pickamix is lovely!

Gabrielle
Thank you very much, my dear! Next post - the ones I didn't submit. The best things I made for Hush rounds were always the things I couldn't submit. I went a little crazy on Elisabeth's Buffy challenge caps. So much fun!

I was going to ask Elisabeth to do an Amber Benson round before I found out she's handing the reins over. The fact that Hush was the first icontest I ever entered, and this is her last round as moderator, that makes this win extra-special to me.

By the by, you have been SUCH an encouragement and source of inspiration to me, have I mentioned?
Congrats! I'm also glad that my favorite icon in the batch won something too. You can see it as the predifined icon now. *Tom Hiddleston's laugh in distance*
OMG! You picked my icon as your default - and it isn't a Buffy icon? I am super-honored, Kiki dear!

I'm really happy with how that one came out - and it was all just basic adjustments in photobucket no fancy effects or filters. It actually started as a larger version:

I love the "two little girls" variant though I do think that the icon is perfect like that. It's so colorful and I love the contrast between the fairytale text and the violent image. It's very archetypical, I think: the idea that a little girl has to bleed to grow up. I chose it for that reason. And because it's shiny, of course. X3
How are you feeling lately by the by, sweetheart? I notice you're posting chapters of fic on your journal.

I love the "two little girls" variant

I do too but I couldn't get it that amount of text to look right in icon size. Legibility is a thing with me.

It's so colorful and I love the contrast between the fairytale text and the violent image.

YESSSS! that's exactly what I was going for, because that's what Faith's dream essentially is, a fairy tale she tells herself. We're all the protagonists of our own stories and the buffyverse is a story about stories, and rewriting them. I'm happy that worked.

I have versions without text of that of course, and I'm all for leaving empty space but this image needed that contrast to finish it. And, draw the eye downward to the knife, which is lower than the usual "center of focus".

See also: Summers, Dawn, The Gift.

I like your reasoning.

And because it's shiny, of course.

Of course! :D The hard shine of the knife is one of my favorite things about it - and the color!
How are you feeling lately by the by, sweetheart? I notice you're posting chapters of fic on your journal.

I'm doing good. I should be more anxious for the next exam, but I'm very relaxed and I'm feeling mostly good. It's nice. Eventually I will make a personal post to update the current situation. Thanks for asking!

And it's nice. Plus for my personal icon I prefer the "one girl" version, because, you know, I'm just a girl and so it seems spotted on for default image on the journal.

I really love this particular version. I have my own interpretation of it. My eye catches the yellow shirt, at first, and yellow is the color of intellectual energy, positivity, but also jealousy and illness and in the yellow shirt there are birds flying (freedom) except that you go on and see the shape of the knife buried in the flesh and all the blood spilling. It's broken freedom and innocence lost and your icon perfectly captures the detail. And the fairytale text is so perfect because it's the sacrifice of the princess. To be reborn she has to suffer first. It catches my attention that Buffy isn't really striking a move against Faith (I don't know how to explain): her hand is relaxed, it feels like she's just *giving* something.

Thank you m'lady! I owe it all to the encouragement of my wonderful friends. *hugs*

You're still on your honeymoon, by the by?
Nope. We've been home for a week now.

I posted a honeymoon recap here.
Feel free to check out my adventures!

P.S. I also made art today. bad_swa is featuring Gunn as a special guest so I made a Willow/Gunn banner. Not a pairing I would normally think of, but I'm really thrilled by how it turned out. That one is here . I have you and pickamix to thank for the nudge back into the Photoshop world.

I saw the photos of the recap but hadn't read the text yet, it's on my list. You and Nick are SO ADORABLE!

You made art? OMG!

That one is here

HOLY MOLY! That is one damnably sexy banner, sweetie! Erotic AND elegant! What a fantastic re-entry into artwork - this one is just begging for a fic to go with it. Why have you been away from it so long, I can't imagine. You should be thrilled with this,

I didn't see your signature, did I overlook it? (I may have been staring at Willow's leg too much or into Gunn's eyes and missed it. *ahem*)

I have you and pickamix to thank for the nudge back into the Photoshop world.

Really? I'm honored - and floored. I inspired YOU? (Can I nudge you even further? I take my Musedom duties quite seriously you know.) pickamix is a wonderful source of encouragement, isn't she?
Thanks so much!!

I think part of it has just been learning how to use Photoshop on a Mac. I was really used to doing it on a PC and that is not the case anymore.

I did not sign the manip. I don't know why, but I've never done that unless I make myself a fic banner or something and then I'm just listed on there as the author.

You can absolutely nudge me any time!

I am hoping to write a story to go along with the banner. I just need to get into the right frame of mine. Did someone say weekend Angel marathon? :P
Congrats with the win! And this Buffy banner is absolutely gorgeous, as I already said)
Thanks sweetie!

It is lovely, isn't it? Beauty is so inspiring to me, and this was such a thoughtful gift.

And congratulations to your second place win at btvs_hush! It's a truly lovely icon.

It was my pleasure to make a autumnal Buffy for you!

She was such a lovely surprise to receive! And really so very thoughtful of you.

BTW, I've edited the post slightly to indicate that it's actually two separate images, not one, but I didn't realize until I posted how cool they look side by side, as if it were a single poster image. I feel like I want to put them together in a pretty gold frame (and if ipiccy had any such thing I'd do just that. It doesn't. It's frame "collection" sucks ostrich eggs.)

Thank you again, so much!

I'll do that, thank you! Do you recommend a source to start with?

ETA - hey I did a quick google search and I may have found some neat stuff on flickr! (boy that was fast) And let me tell you I want to dive right in and use all these wonderful textures - I want to eat them up with a spoon:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/framesandbordersforuse/pool/

I'm utterly ruined. *LMAO*

But I didn't see on the screen yet what I see in my head - old gold, not too fancy, elegant to compliment your art, not detract from it.This is a brown wood one but it's simple, and could be "repainted" or "burnished" ever so slightly, don't you think? some of the gold frame layers out there are too fancy and distracting IMHO.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/34651674@N07/12935979525/in/pool-framesandbordersforuse/

This is nifty and pseudo-gothic but it may be a bit too "much"?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/34651674@N07/12935979525/in/pool-framesandbordersforuse/

I didn't see anything yet with a "mat" and that might be nice around the pictures, but I only just started. Oh I will have such fun, how have not known about all of this wonderful world of digital art for so long?

I've been browsing for a decent gold frame that's pretty without being overly ornate or that gaudy bright nasty type.

Right? i thought it would be super-easy to find, but no. I may have to create my own.

Are you a member of deviant art? I wanted to use some text textures I found there but i kept running into "you must be a member of deviantart to use this" and I thought, hell, i'll just type my own damn font on the image or do without.

Thank you again ever so much for these, sweetie!

And by the by I saw your light Willow artwork yesterday and typed a very long and enthusiastic response - then LJ crashed when i hit the post button (bad LJ! no biscuit!) The short version being: THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Update: I tried making my own frame by photographing and cropping one in my house...you can imagine, my camera and my skills are not that good.

Here's a weird idea: in the greg gorman photo set this poster comes from, Sarah is leaning against gilded moldings or "furniture" in other shots that are super high-quality. Is it possible to crop a section of the molding, duplicate it and construct a frame? i'd be game to try. (aka how crazy does this sound?)

the other option is the stone "altar" in another of the shots but that seems a little too dark?

After my 20in20 set is done with I'll play with it. (You do not want to know what I'm procrastinating from doing right now.)

Congrats on your wins! Your icons are lovely. I particularly like the way the colors in the btvs_hush icon accentuate Sarah's otherworldly beauty. And the posters pickamix made are beautiful as well.

Thank you so much on the feedback sweetie! The hush winner was not my favorite of my entries, so it's really nice to hear other folks talk about why they like what they do. It helps me to appreciate it more through someone else's eyes.

I do like how the colors transform the pseudo-goth glam of the original image to boho-gypsy chic.

And the posters pickamix made are beautiful as well.

Aren't they? she's very talented and these are wonderful gifts - a really sweet surprise.
