Keep Her Safe (Buffy, Willow, Tara, Dawn artwork from Round 8 btvs20in20)

I've been woefully unable to produce anything new the past few days but fortunately I still have some hidden goodies to share. These are the banner versions of my "Family" icon for btvsats20in20 Round 8. These images made me decide on Season 5 as my claim for Round 9 (and I have ONE - count 'em, ONE! - icon finished.  Um...yay?)

When I was working on my Family icon for the last round I happened to notice how nicely the images from Tough Love and Spiral happened to match up. Season 5 was all about Buffy, Willow, Tara and Dawn for me, so I loved the congruency and parallels here. At the very last I added Joyce's words to Buffy from Listening to Fear, which ties the image together visually, emotionally and thematically. (Joyce is so very underused throughout the entire series; ironic that her presence is more powerful in her absence after the Body.) It's a reminder of what tied all four of them together and bond them to each other - in blood and in bond.

I love the way Dawn and Tara's light brunette locks blend together as their hair falls past their shoulders; how Buffy's hand seems to be an extension of Willow's arm; the way red from the background of the Tough Love image glows like a spot of blood on the side of Dawn's head and Buffy's fingers (a happy accident for me), echoing Dawn's real wound, Tara's shirt, and Willow's hair.

3 My icon for Round 8; I made it after I cropped the large banner and realized it could just fit the icon format.  I can't decide which of the square banners below I like best - they each have their charms - , so I'll let you decide:

These image demonstrates how Season 5 complicated the roles of "heroes" and "damsels" (as it did so often); Tara was Glory's victim but also a hero, choosing to sacrifice herself, returning the favor Buffy and Dawn extended to her when they clamed her as their own ("Family"). Dawn enters the show as Buffy's damsel to be protected, yet defended her mother and fought the demon in "Listening to Fear", and was ready to throw herself from the Tower in Chosen until Buffy intervened. Conversely there are many times during that Season when Buffy and Willow, a powerful Slayer and Witch with years of experience fighting evil, are left to watch helplessly as people they love are harmed or die.

Yes, I got teary-eyes making these. I'd forgotten what Season 5 had been all about for me when I watched it: these four characters, my beloved girls, rag-tag heroes fighting against hopeless odds. The "femininity" and domesticity of Season 5, the sense of family; how happy I was to see Joyce get a bigger role onscreen and my hopes were ripped away. It was the season that my love for Buffy Summers became absolute; she passed from being a character I was interested in to being mine, a part of my heart.

I love all four of these girls fiercely - in part because of how fiercely they love each other. Not "perfectly", not in a LIttle-House-on-the-Prairie-Hallmark-card way; real, deep, messy "weird love".

I don't often get a chance to browse my friends page, but I am SO glad that i was able to this morning

That is stunning work ... truly lovely.

The thoughts that you have also make me wish I could get back to my re-watching .... I love the series because of the multiple layers ... you can just enjoy the story, or you can start seeing the good and bad, the development of the people, etc.

So much to love, and your art work to help remind us of these layers.

Thank you.
Oh Deb thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback! I'm so glad these struck a chord in you and that you got the chance to see them. Your comments inspired me to add version 1 to my Welcome post (it's good to mix things up now and again.)

I know what you mean btw, I don't often get a chance to browse through my friends page either lately, what with work etc.

YES. Absolutely - I remember how it just crept on me when i was watching it, and still does.

I hope you get to do a rewatch I'd love to hear your thoughts - and see more art someday? I've missed you here.

*HUGS YOU*
I love S5 SO MUCH. And I have so many feelings about Though Love. SO MANY. I mean, the parallel between Willow and Buffy/ Tara and Dawn kills me. I love the fact that Willow and Buffy can understand each other because they are both willing to take care of their girls to the end of the world.

I can't. My heart.

I really like the 4-5-6 variants with the different font and the softer coloring.
I love S5 SO MUCH.

Although I'm taken aback at how much Riley is in it - but the women are THE THING for me that season, absolutely.

And I have so many feelings about Tough Love. SO MANY.

It's so freakin' complex I could spend the rest of my life detangling the strands of season five but that episode alone - Willow was the original damsel and "little sister" to Buffy, now Dawn has taken her place, but so has Tara; except tara has powers in her own right and she's not directly Buffy's damsel, she's Willow's; but the four of them are still so interconnected.

And the argument that Willow and tara part company on in TL? This might be an unpopular opinion but it felt like a very real couples argument to me. Not as loud or as heated, but the flow of the conversation very real- meandering from one subject to the next. What IS the thing they are really arguing about? As in most couples arguments the thing people think they're arguing about is not the thing they're arguing about.

And even if Willow had gone to the fair with Tara what matter? Glory might have mind-sucked them both, or cornered Tara when Willow went to the hot dog stand and the results would have been the same.

Would buffy have protected Dawn with the same fervour if she hadn't made that "deathbed promise" to Joyce? If Joyce hadn't died? Or isn't that just Buffy doing what Buffy does, protecting people she cares about. But Joyce's death changes Buffy forever.

they are both willing to take care of their girls to the end of the world.

MY GIRLS!

Full disclosure: When I was watching the season I was a little uncomfortable to be honest at FIRST with Tara being infantalized, and W/T being openly paralleled to Buffy and Dawn; it made far more sense when I stepped back from it and saw the bigger picture of "family" going all the way back to S1. And then also the way tara's arc developed in S6 and she became awesome in her own right *sobs*

To be honest I don't know why there isn't TONS of fic focusing on the ladies especially in S5 (other than "fan fiction is 99.9% shipping and porn") but I can hope. I can dream.

Thank you SO much for your thoughtful comments Kiki! I do like those variants a lot. I added #1 to my Welcome post, but I might switch it out for another version at some point.) My dream come true is that my art will inspire writers to write meta and stories, and other artists to make more lady-friendly art.
You already know that I think these are exquisite, but it never hurts to say it again. You really know how to evoke emotion with your creations. I am truly impressed.

I'd be more eloquent, but I'm sick as a boiled owl and headed back to bed. Had to pop in and tell you you're incredibly gifted, though.

Gabrielle you are BEYOND eloquent (I would never have guessed you were sick if you hadn't told me. I hope it's not the thing I had, and that you're feeling better soon!)

You really know how to evoke emotion with your creations

THAT means the world to me that you think so, it truly does.

Thank you for coming by and commenting, I'm very pleased you like them! I've been enjoying your wonderful fiction very much (thanks to velvetwhip), so it's an especial honor.

I hope you'll look around my humble abode (sorry I was a moulin rouge fan back in the day) ; I just added the first banner to my Welcome post, which I've recently updated. You'll notice my place is entirely Buffy-friendly and I love the ladies of the 'verse.
Your artwork's so lovely it's hard to choose favorites! :) I like the tenderness that your work communicates...there's a lot of violence on BtVS, but underneath all of that are softer, gentler qualities like love and friendship and support and forgiveness. I really feel them in your art.

And you needn't apologize for artwork for other fandoms. I think most people understand that there's life outside of your One True Fandom, which can change over time too. :)

Felicia your wonderful comments made my day! That is EXACTLY what I'm striving to convey in this work. I'm thrilled that it comes across for you.

Hee. I was actually "mock-apologizing" for the random reference that you may or not be familiar with. I've assumed one too many times in the past. I actually haven't done any MR artwork in years, heres some of my favorite icons that are a few years old: http://red-satin-doll.livejournal.com/46668.html

I also posted a fan fiction for the hours here but can't find the link right now, I'll dig it up sometime soon.
