Timing is everything (challenge vote at whedon_elite and slayerstillness)

Yes I am back - to my last-minute-Lucy ways:

Voting deadlines TODAY at whedon_elite #110 "Emerald Green" and   slayerstillness Challenge 38 "In the Beginning".

ETA: The winning entries have been announced at whedon_elite and it's a sweep: congratulations hsapiens!

And thank you to everyone who voted for my entries : becoming green iconv2for whedonelite110Jan2015 willowiconwhedonelitefinalsharpenbyredsatindoll2015 1-2

Even if the voting is closed, just check out the marvelous entries.  (This is one of the unfortunate things about icontests - some of my favorite icons last year were not award winners, but it's easy for them to be unfairly forgotten if folks don't see them.)

You still have plenty of time to enter the next challenges:

whedon_elite "Analogous Colors" (colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel),  and  slayerstillness "Love is in the Air" challenge for icons with "couples" - including non-canon pairings! Can I get an amen, someone? Some of the loveliest fanart I've seen has been devoted to non-canon pairings; I think the lack of preexisting material forces fanartists to be more creative in putting images together.
You're back!

I thought that some of the "In the Beginning" icons were yours. It's such an amazing round, with incredible entries, and now I'm curious to know who did what. I also assume that you're going to grace us with a non canon pairing. I'm waiting!
Hey you! *WAVES*

I read your last two chapters of Dreams and Mirrors but didn't comment, forgive me. Because it's coming along gorgeously, I've been swamped with more work and real life stuff. Which is a lousy excuse, I know.

And I just added my entries for whedon elite to this post because the winners have been announced.

I thought that some of the "In the Beginning" icons were yours.

Did you vote? I'm curious to know which you think are mine, but I can wait until after the winners are announced. I brainstormed some ideas off the inimitable velvetwhip. I think I submitted one I like; one "I like this but I liked the alt better" and at least one "what in the world was I thinking?" :P

It's such an amazing round, with incredible entries, and now I'm curious to know who did what.

RIGHT? There's a couple I think I might know who did them based on style but mostly I have no clue whatsoever. And there's one or two that are just phenomenal and I'm dying to find out who made them (because I'm dying to snag.)

I also assume that you're going to grace us with a non canon pairing. I'm waiting!

You better believe it!

Unfortunately I dropped out of round 7 of btvsats20in20 - I really wanted to do it and the wiffy claim, and I've done all other rounds prior, but i just don't have the time or energy needed. So I think I'll funnel some of my ideas that I've been toying with into the next round of slayerstillness. 5 icons plus alts I can handle easier.

Don't worry at all! I supposed that you were busy. I wanted to send you a private message but I thought it was too clingy. I'm just glad that you're back! I adore you and your art :D I'm so glad you like Dreams and Mirrors. It was supposed to be short, but I'm having a lot of ideas and I think I'm falling in love with Dru. I want to write more and more, SEND HELP.

But anyway, I hope RL goes well. *hugs*

I think that maybe the Buffy/Xander is yours? I also think that Prophecy Girl icon is beyond amazing and I could see that being yours. That's my favorite icon from the selection because is so symbolic and perfect.

So it will be Wiffy? I'm curious! (I was thinking about Tara/Buffy, knowing you) I also hope that RL isn't too busy. It's nice to have some time to relax.
I wanted to send you a private message but I thought it was too clingy.

Oh gosh no, it's not at all, it's no different to a letter or phone call - send me a PM anytime!

And thank you so very much for the compliments to my work! I wanted to say that these recent chapters of yours give a sense of Dru being as much her own creation as Angelus', not just a tabula rasa he molded on his own. When she's healed in S2 she's very much her own person, someone whom neither Angelus or Spike can control. I've argued that about both Buffy and Drusilla as you know, their lives are their art "they make it with their hands". And your writing portrays that process, even if it's in the negative sense of being a victim of torture, but she's more than that, if that makes sense?

So it will be Wiffy? I'm curious! (I was thinking about Tara/Buffy, knowing you)

Oh I'm thinking about Wiffy but also others! We'll see what happens.

I just did the winners banners for round 6 of btvsats20in20; one was a Bangel and one was Spuffy, and I think I appreciate better now the challenges of doing an image of a couple for whom there isn't much pre-existing photo material. I wanted to just use promotional images for those two; but the same applies to Wiffy vs Bara (I hate smushnames but they're easy to use.) There's lots of images of Buffy and Willow interacting, very few of Buffy and Tara.

And my exhaustion is my fault for agreeing to more hours at this new job - the job I'm doing isn't what was described to me, and I didn't realize how much the added time would wear me out.

Your comments are so great. Thanks so much! And thanks for being so interested in my work. It gives me great motivation. The thing is, for me, when I write I let myself go with it. I plan but at the same time I don't really plan. (I don't know if any of this makes sense) I know what I want to go with this fic and what I want Dru to be at the end of this fic and what Buffy means to her. The thing is I'm also literally growing with this story. I think I'm putting myself - or a part of myself - in it and I recently dealing with some stuff and I don't know. It makes sense if I say that I'm reaching my inner Dru? And I don't know if she's just a victim or she's more than that. I want to discover that too.

Sorry for the rant. Do I seem like a pretentious pseudo-writer? XD I'm just having fun. Thanks so much for your support.

It would be interesting to see all kinds of femslash Buffy pairings and the general theme would be ... femslash, I suppose? But I'll just wait here as always. Pretty curious.

I'm sorry. But I hope you like this new job and that it's interesting for you.

Yes it does! I find the same thing with my artwork - I go in with an idea but have to be open to what comes to me as I free-associate with the imagery. Whereas with writing, I can't seem to plan anything at all and go nowhere. It sounds to me as if you've found the right balance.

And that's a mark of true art. It's why we do it.

YES!

I seem like a pretentious pseudo-writer?

Not at all, this is fascinating to hear and talk about! I love the thought you put into this - your intellect is there but also your emotions, so it's not an empty story, it's very strong that way.

It is, but too many hours and no support whatsoever within the company. I'm trying to take steps to change that, hopefully.

I plan because I can't start a story without a solid foundation and without knowing where I want to go with it. But at the same time stuff happens and ideas happens and this fic was supposed to be eight chapters long and I'm there and Dru and Buffy never even meet. Also I'm rewatching S2 to understand Dru better so also ideas.

Thanks so much! I'm always so emotional when I write something. Like I have to cry for the characters, otherwise it won't work XD

Fingers crossed for you finding a solution.

Also the new icons! The sing green icon, wow! But I must say, you excell when it comes to Willow. Icon 2, pretty much perfect. It was hard to choose among the green icons. Excellent works all of them.

The important thing of course is that you know that about yourself and have a work process that actually works for you. Lots of people flail terribly - there's no lack of ideas but lack of execution.

It occurred to me that with doing fan art, the purpose is my "ending", what I'm going for (a set of 5 or 20, a fiction poster, whatever); but there's a lot of freedom in terms of getting there. Sometimes too much!

this fic was supposed to be eight chapters long and I'm there and Dru and Buffy never even meet.

I don't know how much you've written that you haven't posted, if anything? I think that's one thing the computer and internet has changed for people, the ability to post immediately and have things read.

But also, the definition of a "chapter" is very different online than in a printed book. Your eight chapters would probably be one or two in print. (Although I'm reading an Alice Walker novel right now and some of her chapters are quite short.)

I've not done a rewatch of S2 since I first watched the series - almost three years ago? It would be interesting - and probably helpful since I'm doing more early seasons icons. Are you posting rewatch thoughts?

Like I have to cry for the characters, otherwise it won't work XD

When i read the drafts of one of my best friend's novels in progress I can also tell which passages made her cry. I think emotional engagement is very important.

Also the new icons! The sing green icon, wow!

Thank you so much! The sing icon is an alt version of the one I entered in slayerstillness 37 that won best crop and most creative (I made tons of alts icons and banners from that one screen cap of Buffy) I had so much fun with that screen cap God I love that shot so much - Sarah in all her "imperfect" perfection.

I didn't realize when I was making the new Willow icon that the Buffy one was the precursor but that's a good example I think of how my brain unconsciously flows. I think the Willow one is even better but to be fair, it was a very high quality studio photo, not a screenshot, so better source material to start with.

It's also the result of hanging around in other comms, seeing more icon styles and trying to achieve what other people get with Photoshop.

And thank you again for the compliments! Remember, you're not seeing a lot of reject versions. :P (Someone else has already snagged #2 so I'm using #3 as a user pic.) Some really gorgeous icons were made for this round, but there are some very talented artists at whedon_elite, I'm fortunate to be able to "watch and learn".

But I must say, you excell when it comes to Willow.

I'm going to agree with you there - and I have no idea how that happened. Isn't that weird? Like, I'm not in "Willow fandom" per se except as an honorary member. I LOVE Buffy, but it's my Willow icons that generate the most excitement and conversation.

I think perhaps it's the little bit of distance I have from her? I actually identify more with Willow in the early seasons, but i don't have the same depth of emotional response to her.

I understand! I'm totally like that. But that's the fun of art, I think.

Yeah, I'm actually cheating because the chapters are very short, but I don't have time for larger chapters and I feel comfortable with these mini little things. I'm getting lazier and lazier the more I go on writing XD I used to write a lot more, now I'm more focused on details and the mini format helps a lot. Still, I thought it was like a short superficial thing and now my brain is also suggesting me sequels, AUs and Spike/Buffy/Dru threesomes and a deeper look on Dru and Buffy parallels. I'm getting absorbed by this project and that's exciting. I feel I could write forever and it makes me really happy. :D

Yes, I remember that icon! Although maybe I love this black and white/green variant more? I don't know. SMG has an incredible expressive and peculiar face. I have a big crush on her, so there's that, I couldn't get tired of seeing images about her.

I've not done a rewatch of S2 since I first watched the series - almost three years ago? It would be interesting - and probably helpful since I'm doing more early seasons icons. Are you posting rewatch thoughts?

Unfortunately I don't have time. I'm still sleeping too much!

But it could be a totally aesthetic thing. Or also because you're more relaxed with her and you let yourself go and don't think too much. I still tend to pick mostly Buffy icons because Idk. It feels the right thing to express myself. (?)
I meant to give a heads up last night and was too tired to manage a simple post! Alas whedon elite voting is closed but slayerstilness should still be open.

I've added my entries and alts for whedon elite to this post - I think you will approve of my Willow entry, Gabrielle. It's one of the prettiest icons I've done and it didn't win but it got a handful of votes. I'm really super pleased with it.

YAY!
*glomps*

Glad to see that you're back. :)

Love the icons. Especially: "Willow Fan: No Apologies."
*gigglesnort*

Thank you sweetie! I've actually been sort of "behind the scenes" a lot but not posting. I really want to get back to it, I miss hanging out here!

Especially: "Willow Fan: No Apologies."

I'm glad you like it hon, I had you and Velvetwhip in mind especially for that one. (I could do an entire series of lady-character icons with that tag line, including Lily from HIMYM 'cause hating on the ladies just gets me down, you know?) I just wish I could get better text effects.

I adore your icons, sweetie. May I snag some, not only from this post but others as well?
Oh my gosh absolutely!

I'll be curious as to which ones you end up choosing

(And thank you for asking because you've reminded me that I am woefully behind in posting other icons and artwork here, rather than trusting folks to find stuff on their own at the various comms. I will work on that.)
I love #2, in fact I voted for it in whedon_elite. I love the clarity, the crop and the striking green of the eyes, nice job.
Thank you sweetie! You must have voted right when the mod shut down the voting because I don't see your comment there but that's on me for not notifying people about the voting much earlier. I need to get back to making simple posts.

And I'm super flattered and honored that you like it. I'm really pleased with it too. The source image is already fantastic (I'm using it for other banners), so that always helps.
Thank you so much! If this keeps up my head will swell. Not that I mind....

I'm not 100% pleased with how the text came out in these, but the better my images get, the more dissatisfied I am with the limitations of my text toolbox.

BTW, have you seen the icons I did for Round 37 of Slayerstillness? I'm very pleased with those as well but need to post them here. (You do know how to motivate me.)
