And Now For Something (Not-Quite) Completely Similar: Vote Now at Slayerstillness Challenge 26

Sharpen your pencils, kids; you may need to take notes for this one:  There are TWO voting posts for slayerstillness Challenge 26 "The Same..But Different".

1) Voting Part 1: You need to select your TOP THREE (3) icons sets out of ten. THEN

2) Voting Part 2: Vote for your TOP FOUR icons plus Best Color, Best Crop and Most Creative....out of a total of 50.

Yeah, 50. All of them amazing. And I used to bitch and moan when I had 25 to pick from. If only I'd known....

I don't know about anyone else but I looked at the entries last night, slept on it, then voted on Part 1 this morning. Having participated in btvsats20in20 kind of prepped me for this, and my criteria was weirdly simple: Which sets did I still remember from the night before before I even turned on the computer screen? Which sets lingered in my memory? I may need to try that technique more often in future.

And I'm definitely going to give Part 2 another night's sleep but the deadline is Wednesday June 25th so I can't delay long.

The idea of multiple icons based off a single cap is also one of the 20 themes for Round 2 of btvsats20in20. I'm surprised it's not done or allowed more often, but that's because of the way my brain works. I made Moulin Rouge caps several years ago in a vacuum, pretty much - no prompts, contest or icon community so I was just amusing myself, and doing multiple variations of a single image is how my brain tends to want to go. It's not planned in advance, it's just pure play. I can keep going until I'm utterly bored by an effect, turn right and try another color or effect, or leave off for a new image. Making a "one-and-done" is a bit more rare for me, atlhough I probably need to discipline myself to do so more often if I'm going to continue participating in icontests.

I've been promising my homegirls clockwork_hart1 and eilowyn that I'd start posting my old Moulin Rouge icons anyway. The Moulin Rouge icons were made in Photobuckets' previous editing suite - now available online as Fotoflexer which seems crude to me now but it has a couple of nifty tricks in its bag:

01-05 "Daddy Girl" series

06-10 This set was based on a rare poster for Moulin Rouge; I got the effect of a drawing or cartoon simply by increasing contrast, brightness, and sharpness in the old Photobucket suite

So go vote, Gentle Reader, but then tell me - what techniques, tendency or style do you recognize in your own art (visual art, writing, vidding, etc) that you are a bit shy about or keep "in the closet", or simply don't see "done", that you enjoy doing and picked up along the way because no one told you not to?
I just voted and oh my stars was it difficult! All the icons were terrific!

Love your Moulin Rouge icons!

Gabrielle
Thank you Gabrielle! (I wanted to post more but many of them didn't look as good as I thought they would. Well, they are four+ years old, what do I expect?)

I just voted and oh my stars was it difficult!

TELL ME ABOUT IT. *lol* I am definitely waiting until tomorrow for part 2 - the only one I'm sure of is Best Crop icon.
It will be so difficult XD

The Moulin Rouge icons are incredibly pretty. So colorful and like pop paintings.
Thanks sweetie! The movie is so colorful and hypperreal that it's easy to get nifty artsty icons with them. Btvs has been a lot harder for me because it's more realistic.

I'll post some more of the better ones here. Sometimes they look much better on Photobucket than on LJ!
Moulin Rouge!!!!

I love them, I do. #8 is my favourite, I love how intense it is whilst embracing the pop-art/theatrics that make the film so good. Nicole's eyes really "pop" in that one.

VOTING IS HARD. HARD HARD HARD.

And I've been thinking a lot about that last question, and I'm really interested in what people say, and I'm struggling to think about what I would say. And God, I just couldn't think. I'm pretty open with what I write and make - I do what I feel at the time as honestly as I can; I make what I feel. So I'm not sure I have a "crutch" or an "old shame" that I want to hide because it's amateur (and gee to I sound naive), apart from just generally getting better and honing the skill. I'm trying to think - and by all means, if you can think of anything in my work that you see, tell me; I'm INTRIGUED NOW!

Thanks, sweetie! Those are some of my favorites of the MR ones I made (and I made bunches of them.)

Right? I was obsessed with that movie for years - the colors! The sparkle! the angst! THE COSTUMES! the dysfunctional surrogate father-daughter relationship.

I do what I feel at the time as honestly as I can;

And it shows in your work, and how deeply I feel when I read it; the intense compassion you bring to bear.

If I may, I'd also say your craft as a writer has improved just in the short time I've had the pleasure of knowing you; your writing is ever more self-assured, elegant and graceful. In other words, I can't think of a thing I'd want to change at the moment!

I voted for part one a few days ago but had a harder time with part two.
I voted for part 2 last night just before I went to bed. I actually found it harder to vote in Part 2 looking at the icons all next to each other in their sets - I wanted to scramble them up so I could see them better. (like, someone's set would be all of a piece in terms of quality so which one did I actually want to vote for?) Was that just me?

BTW I applied the same standard pretty much - how well did I remember the icon from the previous day, two days? In addition to the usual formal factors (technical quality, evoking an emotional response or memory, etc.)
I wanted to scramble them up so I could see them better. (like, someone's set would be all of a piece in terms of quality so which one did I actually want to vote for?) Was that just me? I usually find that there is one icon (sometimes two icons) in each set that I really like. So, I begin by narrowing down the one(s) I like in each set then making my selection from that group.
The Moulin Rouge pop-art ones are definitely my favourite!

Thank you! they were a lot of fun to make. Which icons are you referring to in particular? To me they're all sort of "pop art"-ish.
Oh the "Daddy's Girl" series! Those were some of my favorite icons I ever made, and the first time I made a "set" i really liked. #1 (the red & blue one) was my user pic on another fan forum for the longest time.)
I voted, but it was a super tough choice!

Beautiful work on the Moulin Rouge icons!
Thanks sweetie, glad you like the icons! And that was very hard voting - I managed to do it this morning finally. The only one I was absolute certain since yesterday was my Best Crop choice.
