Slayerstillness & Otherworldlyrics - Please Tell Me I'm not the ONLY person who confuses the two?**

Aka, How is A Busy and Easily Confusable Fan Supposed to Keep Up?

1) Where are my manners? I forgot to congratulate the winners of otherworldlyric icontest #164 kwritten and xclaire_delunex!  The prompt lyrics for this challenge was the song "Downtown" - the 1960's classic recorded by Petulia Clark. I admit I was too busy to enter and frankly my memories of the song got too much in the way, so I wasn't inspired this time. But oh my goodness, what a lovely batch of entries - when it came time to vote, I completely forgot what the song was bcause these artists were able to divorce the song from it's original context and just create lovely things in keeping with the buffyverse. And such lovelies these were! Incredible work all 'round.

BTW - am I the only person who looked at kwritten's entry and for a moment was confused if it was Dawn or Tara? And I mean that as a compliment - there's sort of a "family resemblance" that bleeds into this delicate, dreamy image. (And y'all know my feelings about my One True Family. If not, I will gladly explain the matter in great detail.)

2) Speaking of OWL, VOTING IS UP for Challenge 165 http://otherworldlyric.livejournal.com/225456.html (yes, I'm away from home again.) This prompt was Sarah McLachlan's "World on Fire" and oh my was this song a natural fit for the buffverse. (yes I submitted three entries.) Coming up with ideas was not the problem this time being able to stop myself was.  (I sent my wonderful beta Ryan wickedbish 41 choices to contemplate - after I'd pared down from 75 'twas well nigh ridiculous of me.)

And picking ones to vote for was no problem - except that I could hardly bear to limit myself to three.

So goest thou and vote!
Those were some great entries from the previous round and round 165! I voted already :)

(though I thought I should mention that your link for the voting page a OWL is wrong, it should say .html at the end not .com)

And I agree, picking just 3 icons is so difficult!!
I just fixed the link to OWL, thanks for the heads up! (This PC where I'm at on weekends will not just do a simple cut and paste.)

ETA: trying to pick just three is always a nightmare. Even at slayerstillness, you theoretically get three more to give prizes too, so that should make it easier, right? WRONG. :p

The link is all fixed now hon, thank you! (And huzzah for voting!)

There is admittedly one in the current challenge in particular that popped out at me immediately and after that, it was a nightmare trying to chose.
I think that, this time, I maybe voted one of your icons and two icons from other artists. I voted 011 which could be yours, maybe. And then 009 which I don't think it's yours and 002 - even if I don't know the characters - because it's pretty.

I can say all of this, right? XD
even if I don't know the characters - because it's pretty.

*nods* Two of my vote-getters in round 163 were characters I didn't recognize, I just liked the icons.
http://otherworldlyric.livejournal.com/223273.html I suppose in those instances, I'm voting purely for aesthetics (eye appeal) whereas with btvs icons there's emotional attachments and memories and maybe that makes it harder for me to be truly objective? IDK

I can say all of this, right? XD

I suppose you can - I'm not tellin' until after the challenge is closed! :P
I voted! I agree that it was tough to choose a favorite. There were a lot of awesome entries.
Oh, that looks like a fun community. I joined. Can't make icons to save my life, but maybe I'll get inspired.
Can't make icons to save my life, but maybe I'll get inspired.

And that is what they call in layman's terms "a load of bull" m'dear. ;p

The other one to join is slayerstillness, if you haven't already. It's just Buffyverse icons, no text; also very good quality - and one of the nifty things (I think) is that they open up the responses to the submission and voting threads after a challenge is closed and winners are announced, so there's no having to guess who made what, you can see for yourself.

*laughs* I hate false modesty. But you may have noticed I use the same icon over and over. I have a total of 3 icons in my user pics. That's not for no reason. Technically, yes, it is quite possible for me to make icons. But my work style doesn't agree. My "shtick" is in the details. None of that comes through in an icon. Without details, I need to rely more on an overall artistic treatment. And that's where I feel the least confident. Also, thinking in terms of a little tiny picture is totally foreign to me. On the other hand, I do think I'm pretty good at finding an emotion.

I'm sure I will get inspired and give it a try. I marvel at the icons others make, and maybe this will force me to think in a different way.
But you may have noticed I use the same icon over and over.

Nothing wrong with that! When I was first in Moulin Rouge/Nicole Kidman fanboards 1000 (i mean, 10) years ago, I used one icon only because I liked the idea of being "identifiable". Then I started actually making them myself and - forget it folks, that was the end of my icon monogamy.

But my work style doesn't agree. My "shtick" is in the details. None of that comes through in an icon. Without details, I need to rely more on an overall artistic treatment. And that's where I feel the least confident.

That I definitely understand. Now that I've "discovered" text (ha) I tend to want to try to say more than is possible to squeeze into that space; which is why I've started resorting to "macros". I tried to make an icon of Buffy's leap from the tower in the Gift with the text "she made a promise to a lady" and I LOVED the idea of it, but then I'd try to squeeze it down and it just didn't work. Or I tried to make some Xin Rong icons for a challenge and I almost cried because the harder I tried the more detail i lost, and I felt like I was obliterating her. Which was a very interesting learning process.

I think your default icon is a thing of beauty (I adore high contrasts) and loses not a jot for having been sized down; but when I make icons I'm constantly wishing that they were closer to 200 square.

I do think I'm pretty good at finding an emotion.

Without emotion we're just left with pretty pictures (or not so pretty.) So that's more than half the battle right there, the rest is pretty much technique and knowing how to use your tools, isn't it?

This round of OWL I entered some icons that were not necessarily what I thought were my best but that got to me (or my beta) on some emotional level - sad, creepy, etc.

If you ever do I'll be interested to see what you come up with!
Very much so - but then again I'm always taken aback by what other people do, the creativity and ideas. How is it possible to be so expressive within 100pixels square?

lol I've never considered this! I'll have to look at it again.

This latest round was SO HARD to vote for! Really incredible submissions this time around.

((I can't wait to share all of the ones that I made that didn't make the ultimate cut of submission, because I really liked this round and made some fun things that just didn't make it!))

*rummages through photobucket library* I knew I had a particular image in mind! punk4life1315's icon: Tara in Buffy's dream in Restless:

ETA TO FIX LINK (sorry):

Tara (Amber) in S4 and early S5 had such a timeless elegance about herself, and I think of Dawn (Michelle) in S7 much the same way, as incredibly elegant in a very honest way.

And it also reminds me of your "blurring the lines" series - in fact, I thought the resemblance might possibly be purposeful for that very reason. The resonance is exciting to me and I love it in any case.

This latest round was SO HARD to vote for! Really incredible submissions this time around.

I remember there was one in particular I voted for and after that - there were about 5 or 6 I wanted to so I honestly don't remember how I voted, because I kept changing my mind. I think it's my brain's way of protecting me - I really don't care about the actual voting anyway. Because then I'm "excluding" something I love just as much and I don't like doing that. I'm all for inclusion.

((I can't wait to share all of the ones that I made that didn't make the ultimate cut of submission, because I really liked this round and made some fun things that just didn't make it!))

*claps hands gleefully* I can't wait to see them either. You make such beautiful images - or remake, refashion, deconstruct, and then put them together again as if they always existed that way.

I had a lot of fun with this round and spent too much time on the icons - there were at least 20 I wanted to submit. Not so much great art - my toolkit is pretty limited - but in terms of telling stories, digging in deep emotionally, and trying to challenge myself by focusing on characters I don't normally.
